Carbon Capture Utilisation

Aker Carbon Capture is a pure-play carbon capture company with solutions, services and technologies serving a range of industries, including the cement, bio and waste-to-energy, gas-to-power and blue hydrogen segments. In collaboration with the Supernordic Studio team I've been able to work with ACC on a variety of projects, such as this showcase video where I was the animator and editor.

The catch of the century

The video was created to showcase the value creation of implementing the CCUS project in Viken municipality, located in the eastern part of Norway. As a member of the Supernordic Studio team, I had the opportunity to be involved in the entire creation process, from the initial stages to its completion. My role in the project included animating and editing the video, sourcing and adding music, as well as incorporating caption text. This article provides an overview of the collaborative process involved in bringing this project to life.

001 - Planning

The project kicked off when our contact from Aker Carbon Capture reached out to us with their vision. They provided an initial script and a simplified storyboard, seeking our assessment on the project's budget. We approached this by estimating the video’s duration, the production methods, and the team required. With this information, we developed a refined storyboard and provided a detailed time estimate for creating and assembling the necessary elements. Upon receiving the green light from the client, we commenced the project.

002 - Illustration & Voice acting

Once the scope was set, we began creating the video by producing all the necessary elements. To bring the visuals to life, we collaborated with our trusted freelancer, João Rocha, for the illustrations based on the storyboard. After providing clear instructions for each frame and specifying any additional requirements, João delivered a series of illustrations in separate Adobe Illustrator files, designed for easy use. For the audio, our client supplied a script that we used to hire a voice actor. We presented a curated selection of voice actors for the client to choose from. Once the ideal actor was selected, we commissioned a few tracks and worked closely with them to develop the voice track for the video, ensuring it aligned with the script and the overall vision.

003 - Animation & editing

While the script and audio were still in the developmental stages, I began working on the animation process concurrently. To start, I created individual projects dedicated to each scene of the storyboard, importing the illustrations created by João. Next, I animated each section in chronological order, developing the visual components of the video. Once the clips were fundamentally complete, I began merging them to ensure a seamless transition between them. After producing all the clips, I arranged them to create a complete video. As the video was taken through its final stages, the voice track was completed, and I was able to apply it to the animation. Thereafter, I reviewed the video in its entirety and timed the animation to the voice track to ensure synchronization between the footage and audio. Additionally, I took the opportunity to refine and enhance aspects of the video to finalize its production.

004 - Music & Caption

When the customer approves the current progress, the next step is preparing the project for publication. This involves incorporating a subtle background music and integrating captions in both Norwegian and English for over-sea distribution. In the same manner as the voice acting process, I presented the client with a selected array of stock music options for their consideration. Meanwhile, to create the captions, I imported the video into Adobe Premiere and utilized its caption generator function to establish a synchronized foundation. This involved adjusting the text content, style, and timing to complement the visuals, beginning with the Norwegian caption and then using it as a base for the English script. Once the captions and music were integrated, the video was polished and ready for publication.

005 - Short version

The main video was typically distributed directly by the customer or published on the CCUS Norge website. However, they also needed a teaser version for social media, ideally with a CTA directing viewers to the full version. To achieve this, the team reconnected with the voice actor to record a simplified audio track suitable for the shorter format. Meanwhile, I focused on creating a condensed version of the video, highlighting key points from the revised script to maintain the core message. After reassembling the visual and audio assets, I prepared the short version for publication. Once finalized, the teaser video was posted on LinkedIn, designed to engage viewers and drive traffic to the full-length video.
